New RetroFE modular installation on EmuMovies FTP

First of all, thanks for all the work it looks amazing. I have everything up and running but when I select a game it just makes a fire sound and doesn't go anywhere. I've tried several systems, sorry if I seem kind of naive but I came from Lakka, but I wanted a little more pizazz when I make an arcade cabinet and this is looking beautiful but so far has no functionality for me.
Well, you still need to add the roms yourself. It's not legal for us to add them here. The setup on EmuMovies uses include.txt files to fill the lists; you can rename them to only see the games you have the roms for.

The roms should go in the roms directory of the corresponding collection, e.g. collections/Atari 2600/roms. For Arcade games you could also use emulators/MAME/roms and use the include.txt file; it's easier to me.

Just curious, I did not see any packs for Atari Jag, Lynx, and a few others. Are those coming by chance? Also, if I get a full Mame pack I seem to be missing quite a few previews in the arcade section. I downloaded the Mame 0.191 Collection, emu, video. Aside from that, it's beautiful work and I've wasted (according to my wife) pretty much my whole week figuring out how it works. You giving me a filled canvas really showed me how I could make my own canvas with this system, so I thank you so much for all the work you've put in and the time you put into it.

Edit: It seems there is a bunch of "test" type games/random jargin. I realized I have 11,803 files in my Roms folder. Aside from sifting through 11k files, is there a faster way to just hide ones without previews?

What I uploaded is the sets that are practically complete. Though I have some material for Atari Jaguar and Lynx, those sets are far from complete, and are missing quite a bit of artwork.

When it comes to MAME Arcade, I generally don't use the roms directory to fill my games list. In stead I use an include.txt file. If you look on the RetroFE website (http://www.retrofe.nl) you'll find an XML set in the download section for the latest MAME releases. Within that zip file you'll also find a directory with include files based on different filters (no clones, casino, mahjong, mature, etc.). Just pick the one you want, and rename it to include.txt in the Arcade directory. That should severely limit the amount of missing art as well; most of the MAME roms aren't even working yet. With the filters I use, about 3000 (non-clone) games are left.

Everything working great so far Phulshof... except for the left analog stick on my logitec pad. Is there a code for that? I have up/down mapped to buttons right now since I couldn't see a reference for "joyup"? "joyPOVup"?? "joy1xaxis"???? Any help here would be great.

Did you check http://www.retrofe.nl/wiki/doku.php?id=controls?

I'm aware that I need to add a button configuration from within the program still; a menu based configuration is still a major lacking feature in RetroFE IMHO.

Hmmm... well that did do the trick however I now experience the same jittery wheel that I thought was just an HS issue. Seems this is a windows (specifically win7?) or possibly just a logitech issue.  I did have one of those Afterglow 360 gamepads. Damn thing just stopped working so I dug out my old Logitech pad. I am going to have to buy another 360 and maybe a PS4 joypad and do some further testing.

In HS I got around this by making a JoyToKey profile mapped to the up/down arrows on my keyboard. But I always thought that I shouldn't have to do that... All the other function of joypad work, just need some kind of analog sensitivity controls or something. Very hard to google this issue.

Anyone else setting this up in a Home Theater style (controllable by joypad, not in arcade cab)? What OS you use? What joypad?

I use a PS3 controller on Windows 10 as well as Linux. You could play around with the sensitivity settings of course.

Is the wheel jittery when using a keyboard as well?

No jitters with keyboard... or when assigned to buttons on joypad. Just the stick.

I don't see any sensitivity settings anywhere.

That's my mistake I'm afraid; originally the controls.conf file contained the following lines:
# Define controller analogue dead zone. Default (when not configured) is 3%.
# deadZone = 3

The deadZone parameter can be used to increase or decrease the analogue dead zone. You could play around with that to see if it helps.

Woohoo! Success! So for anyone else who wants to control everything through a gamepad, here is what I use so far:

up = Keypad 8,Up,joy0Axis1-
down = Keypad 2,Down,joy0Axis1+
left = Keypad 4,Left
right = Keypad 6,Right
pageUp = A
pageDown = B
letterUp = N
letterDown = M
favPlaylist = F
nextPlaylist = F2
prevPlaylist = F1
addPlaylist = I
removePlaylist = O
random = R
select = 1,Return,joy0Button1
back = 2,Escape,joy0Button2
quit = Q, joy0button11
deadZone = 25

* joy0 --- if you don't specify a number it will take these commands from all joysticks!

** joy0Axis1 --- this is up/down with left stick... Change these to Axis0 for left/right if you are using a horizontal theme.

*** quit --- purely personal taste, happens to be push the right analog stick down (the button not the direction) on mine. There may be a PS2 game or 2 that use this button but I'll deal with that later if need be.

**** deadZone --- On quick try this seems to stop all the abnormal movements. Feel free to set as high as needed, I don't think this will affect any games, just menu navigation.

Thanks for the help! I am sure I will be bugging you more in the future, LOL.

Good day phulshof, I have recently been working on setting up nested menus. After some tinkering I finally got it to work... sort of!?!? If I go into one systems list of games (say Atari 2600), then back out to the main and go into another list (say MAME), the "logos" for Atari 2600 are still there on top of the MAME wheel which I can still see moving in the background.

I am using the Animatic skin so can I assume that it doesn't like the nested menus? Are all skins affected like this? Is there an easy fix for this?

That might have something to do with the menu fixes I made for 0.8.13 or 0.8.14; I should have a look at all current themes to see which ones need to be updated. I'll see if I can have a look at Animatic first; the required changes aren't that big anyway, so it should be an easy fix.

MAME 0.193 files are added, including a MAME feature for default horizontal/vertical artwork support. MAME 0.18* files have been removed to keep things clean.

I just discovered last night all the bezels you've converted for MAME and your default horizontal/vertical artwork. I had such a fun night of gaming thanks to everything you do.

I appreciate all of your work and what you post :)

Hello everyone!, I am hoping i can get some help here. Is there a way i can use generic bezels for my MAME 0.193 for games without their own bezels and without Rocketlauncher or the need to compile a new MAME? i apologize if this has already been asked and answered.

Not unless you grabbed the 0.193 that was part of this set. Generic bezels were officially added to MAME 0.194.

The option to use them is fallback_artwork. The way I use it is by adding two files to MAME:

horizont.ini:
fallback_artwork horizont

vertical.ini:
fallback_artwork vertical

This will load horizont.zip or vertical.zip depending on the game.

On the FTP site; see the first post in this thread. :) It's part of this RetroFE modular installation setup. You can also just grab the latest 0.194 from the official mamedev site; it contains the same feature.
