Why does new Mame builds require new romsets?

Hi everyone,

I'm actually trying to build a working Mame library but I encounter a lot of non supported roms with the new build (my romset is at least two years old).

I know that it's a common issue with Mame but I wonder why is this the case only with this emulator?

Thanks in advance.

The newer dumps are more accurate when compared to how the real hardware works. One example of this is progress with CPS2 --> http://arcadehacker.blogspot.com/2017/03/a-journey-into-capcoms-cps2-silicon.html

There's also instances where MCUs are decapped/dumped so the simulation of it can be scrapped which changes which files are required for MAME

People should always upgrade their romsets and use the latest MAME.

Thanks a lot for this technical explanation B2K24, I understand better now. Time for me to set up a new MAME library. :shy:

Thanks a lot B2K24, it's super informative, exactly the kind of info I needed.

Is there a way to know which of my games are still compatible with the newer version of Mame or do I have to redownload them all?

There is a site that SentaiBrad calls the dome of pleasure. The easiest way to upgrade your set is to join a full post and point it to the collection that you already have. It will only download what has changed and then you can clean un-needed data with a software called T-check (it's on their forums)

I don't wish to break any rules here so I'm being careful and discreet about what I say here. I can probably give better answers if you PM me. You're welcome to do so :)
