Atari 2600
The Atari 2600—where it all started, and where it almost ended. Launched in 1977, it was the OG console that let you swap out game cartridges, a revolutionary move back then. Games like Pitfall! and Space Invaders made it a household name, but Atari couldn’t resist shooting itself in the foot. Fast forward to 1982, they gave us the infamous E.T. game—a title so bad, they literally buried it in the desert. Pair that with a lousy Pac-Man port, and you’ve got yourself the recipe for the 1983 video game crash.
Still, the 2600 didn’t just die quietly—it stuck around, selling millions of units until 1992. That’s over a decade of success and some truly questionable business decisions. Atari walked so the NES could run.
