PROJECT: Super NES / Super Famicom Video Snap Overhaul

Circo

Recommended Posts

Over on the HyperSpin forums they have pretty much finalized a database for Super Famicom (Super Nintendo Japan).  You can view the thread here.  I have been working on Super Nintendo for a few days now and synced all the naming with the new xml and came up with a missing list.  I'm hoping a few users may want to assist with making some captures and we can hopefully knock this out rather quickly.  I have also been replacing some of the older videos with updated higher quality ones (USA, Europe) if anyone is interested in a list of these let me know and I will post one.  Members that properly submit 100 or more videos will be upgraded to Content Contributor status and choice of either a HyperSpin Platinum Membership or Lifetime GameEx license.

Here is what you will need:

Please review our submission guide before submitting videos.

I am willing to go along with Circo on this, members who donate 100 or more videos will also be rewarded a free Platinum level membership at HyperSpin-fe.com for either themselves or a friend (if the submitter is already a member.)  Videos must be of approved quality/content as defined by Circo.  Good luck guys, can't wait to see what develops!

Hey, I'm the one who did the system video and have a ton of games recorded already. I don't think you want my avi footage though as I record around 2-3 minutes of raw footage per game and like to edit the best parts where I try not to mess up at all. The files are huge too so I'd hate to upload these.

I noticed you managed to cut the file size of my system intro video in half basically. Can you tell me which codec you're using and what exact settings you use on it? I want to edit and encode these myself. I have Vegas Pro 10, so I can do the fades/normalizing.

Have you looked at our submission guidelines. Everything on my end is scripted and I don't have the exact settings I use for snes in front of me, but I'm using ffmpeg h.264/AAC

Yeah I checked your guide but that is for submitting the raw avi's for you to edit where as I want to do all that myself, these files are huge that I have lol. I was just wondering which codec you encoded with and on what settings but I think I found the answer. The media properties shows Sony AVC which Vegas Pro has built in so I won't need ffmpeg.

For that system vid, I had encoded with Main Concept and a larger bitrate in Vegas Pro, that's why it was twice as big in file size.

Well for each game I've done, I recorded a few minutes then about 20 seconds of the intro if possible, then do the editing. My recorded footage folder is 87gb in size and growing, hah. Anyway, I just found how to duplicate your encoding settings with Main Concept, so should be no problems now. I'll post here again when I'm done with everything, might be a week or two. Unfortunately I won't reach that magic 100 submissions as there aren't even 100 translated games for Super Famicom but oh well. I had started doing this for my own personal setup.

I do the same thing, I just delete my caps after I make the masters which is the #1 reason we typically don't accept final mp4s. But there are only a handful of translations left to do, prob less than 5-6. I've added over 200 vids in the last few days

Well I don't want all my work to do go to waste, this has been very tedious stuff to do the past month. Many of the RPGs and strategy games are harder to do as they require you to play a while until any real gameplay starts. So maybe you'll prefer some of my vids, it's always nice to have choices at least.

Edit: I just checked out your Tactics Ogre vid in ftp for example and two problems I noticed.

1. It looks like the vid was recorded in 60fps then resampled to encode at 30fps, so it's really hazy looking when there's movement. To fix this, you have to do it manually per file. In Vegas Pro, you right click the clip in timeline, go to Properties and check "Disable Resample" or you're going to get blurry footage. It's the only way of I know of doing it.

2. The footage itself is recorded from the very beginning tutorial that only shows how to move your character, nothing happening yet. My footage is from a bit further in, when you have a large battle and get to attack and all that.

I completely understand and that is one of the main reason we are really getting sticky about sticking to the submission guidelines more going forward.  It makes no sense to encode to mp4 then I have to reencode to a master and then re re encode to an mp4.  You have to understand that mp4 is our 4th codec change in 8 years.  All captures should be submitted at 60fps in two parts x264vfw lossless avi and the final product will be perfect.  Plus we will still have masters, while 80% of the snes is fairly old and not perfect we are trying not to make the same mistakes going forward.  I have said it before vs using vegas pro everything is scripted and custom that we use and done in batches.  If you submit a finalized mp4 it usually has to be re edited and broken apart.  It sounds like you still have the masters and such and if you wanted to format them for proper submission that would be great.  It literally just takes me minutes to finalize if done right.

Lol I think your missing the entire point. All of our videos are stored in LOSSLESS avi. The mp4s are also variable bitrate by frame. We aren't using any of the same tools. Please if your going to submit (which is much appreciated) follow the submission guidelines.

Ok, as part of this system update and refresh, if anyone would like to see existing videos replaced for any reason, quality, ghosting, gameplay let us know and they will be added to the list.

I was thinking the video snap for Donkey Kong Country should be redone. The sound seems to lag a bit. I think the recent snaps added are in much better quality then the ones done a few years ago, IMO. But other then that I have no complaints with the current set as i think they are good enough as is.

No, I get your point. I'll submit the avi's then though I wanted to avoid that for one main reason - cropping. What should I do about footage that requires keyframe crops? I don't think that can be done in VirtualDub.

If you're wondering what I mean, check out Star Ocean when you get the chance. On the main navigation screen, there are two black bars on the sides but when you go to into battle, the bars are removed and the screen view widens. In VirtualDub, you can only do universal crops so if I crop the side bars out, then when the footage goes into a random battle, the sides cut off text and such due to the view widening. I only know how to deal with this in Vegas with keyframes.

Thats getting pretty picky, i like it!  To get that detailed with vdub you would have to split the video.  Though that problem does not crop up much.  Does vegas allow you to export 60fps?  If so you could use that just edit to uncompressed and then batch convert to the x264 lossless avi via job control in vdub.  My problem with the big editors (besides the fact that you have to add the transitions manually) is that I usually get stuck at 30fps max and i can't get a decent lossless format to store for a master.

One of the things I didn't mention in this post is that beyond that list I am deep into replacing any video in the set thats not 60fps.

Edit:  Based on you post I took a closer look at some submissions for translated games we got back in December and 36 more videos need to be redone, the artifacts are horrible.  I'll wait on the redos to see what you have.

Hey Circo, only have 5 or so games left to record footage from. One question though before I start on the edits: what exact settings would you like used in the x264 codec? Can you maybe screencap the config page you'd like used so I can duplicate your settings?

Edit: I tried out a bunch of codec settings a bit ago and no matter what I choose, even at lossless, the x264 avi just displays a blank screen and is stuck on the first frame. This was using VirtualDub and the latest x264. I also enabled the VirtualDub Hack too, so I'm not sure what's wrong in the settings.

Good deal. New translation from Aeon Genesis released today for JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken (Japan). I've uploaded the ROM file for you in my folder on the FTP since I know your working on the Super Famicom stuff.

I also updated the Legend of Zelda - Parallel Worlds (Remodel) Hack with the patch for the title screen glitch. It no longer glitches in more accurate emulators like bsnes (Higan) and Snes9x.

Zaitaku Touhyou System - SPAT4-Wide (Japan)

Is not possible to play because it requires an NTT Modem attached to the Snes. (Or atleast i wasnt able to do so via Zsnes,Mednafen and consorts).

I uploaded some footages to /Upload Here/Hydralol/Snes Japan/ would be nice if anybody could check one of them out since it is my first time doing gameplay videos.

I've created a little Spreadsheet so that everyone is able to see which snapshots are allready done and where they are located on the ftp

Don't expect them to play right unless your using VLC, but its a great container to share videos without losing any quality.

Your video submissions were good, though you may want to up your capture resolution to at least 640x480 for best results.

That puts Cryo - 26 Submissions

Look at the dimensions of the video that you sent they are less than half (288x224). You may want to capture at full screen.

Oh Oh, silly me will be fixed at the next Videos. :-)

Will redo the old ones after im done with the rest.
