Heavily Modified Box Art

I recently noticed a lot of the PC box art now isn't "clean" so to speak. It's been heavily edited to add a fake box and a *lot* of fake plastic reflection like an iOS icon.

I can understand that sort of thing for the 3D box art, but not the normal stock box art.

An example would be this (see attached Mafia.png). It's also smaller than all the other box art too. Any ideas where these are all coming from? As it doesn't seem like this would be the standard for the basic box art.
